TOPIC : ATTRIBUTES OF THE WORD OF GOD
In today’s study we will to look at the attributes of the word of God. This is to familiarise with those qualities of the word that makes it an indispensable resource for a healthy Christian life. Christians need to appreciate these attributes to be able to base their life on it. We shall start by examining three.
1. IT IS PURE Psalm 119:140
The purity of the word of God is one distinct quality it has that sets it apart, high and above other writings, whether religious or secular. It teaches highest moral standards and does it in such a way that it draws the reader closer (like a magnet) to the truth, convicts him of sin and brings him to repentance; which effects a positive charge in his life. The word of God is without defect, and never contradicts itself. It is the ultimate truth. It is pure as silver tried in furnace, purified seven times.
2. IT IS PERFECT
Psalm 19:7 says, ‘‘the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul…’’ this implies that the word of God has the quality of completeness in itself that makes it trustworthy. It has such accuracy that makes it reliable, dependable and infallible. It is not erroneous and indeed, it can never be it does not have any iota of imperfection. It is unchanging and absolutely remains an eternal trustworthy guide and teacher of God’s principles which enables us to live successful lives as Christians and also unto eternal life. It has a static performance that cannot be altered. The psalmist observed this truth and was amazed at this attribute of the word of God and exclaimed, ‘‘for ever, o Lord your word is settle in heaven (psalm 119:89).
3. IT IS RESTRAINING
The psalmist says ‘your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you’ (psalm 119:11).This implies that the word of God has the ability to hold back or prevent someone from doing wrong. It acts effectively in helping to pre-empt sin. It has the enormous power to do this. The power comes from God who authored it.
This immense power would be best appreciated if you imagines and understand the immense efforts which Satan makes to pull all mankind into the fire of hell; the sense of purpose which he applies in the process; and the determination he has always had to achieve his goal. But all thanks and praise be to God whose love and grace is given to us through our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ for through Him (who is the word personifies) we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). And through him (the word) we’…can do all things’ by the strength, the will the perseverance, the zeal and power to resist sin (Philippians 4:13). For God has given us sufficient grace in Christ Jesus (the word) which restrains us from falling into sinfulness and ultimate damnation (11 Corinthians 12:9).
1) Thank God for the gift of his word.
2) Ask God to help you to trust and to live by his words.
3) Pray for all those who have not yet discovered the resource of God’s words, for God to draw them by his Spirit.
