BLASPHEMY AND IDLE TALK
MATTHEW 12:22-31, REFS: PSALM 39:1, ECCL.3:7, PHILLIPIANS 2:3

INTRODUCTION/DEFINITION

BLASPHEMY is the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things. Profane talk.
IDLE TALK means foolish and irrelevant speaking.

Our text reveals to us that Jesus Christ was healing and doing miraculous works but the Pharisees had taken offence and started spreading wild talk that Jesus was doing such mighty works by a spirit called Belzeebub the prince of devils.

Jesus knew that this talk came from hearts filled with bile, jealousy and hatred. He rebuked the statement with spiritual facts and warned them of their blasphemy as regards the kingdom of God.

We too need to treat those who seek to malign the holy way of worship that Christ handed to the apostles for all believers.

The world will always speak irreverently about God because it is an enemy of God. Believers must not join the world to speak idle words out of ignorance.

In this study, the issue of what constitutes blasphemies and idle talk will be examined for clearer understanding and the necessary correct attitude and reply will also be treated.

THE CONCEPT OF BLASPHEMY
Blasphemies refer to irreverent talk about God. The truth is that mostly unbelievers can talk in this manner.

This is because a believer who is born again has experienced the power of the Holy Ghost and will not venture into boldly dishonouring Him unless he has gone apostate.

The world is afraid of what they don’t understand. The power that a believer carries is a mystery to an unbeliever.

Now because almost every activity in the kingdom of God is produced by faith, it cannot be scientifically rationalized; it presents veritable grounds for mockery by the unbelieving.

The world would spite what it doesn’t understand and will not respect it because it does not meet their perception and method of greatness.

A man cured of cancer just because a brother-in-Christ agreed with him in faith and prayed to God. When the cancer disappears, the unbeliever would begin smarting remarks that either it was not really cancer or it was an inaccurate diagnosis from the doctors.

Instead of recognizing the power of God in that healing, they rather blaspheme because they do not know better. They are ignorant of the power of Christ and are deceived by the enemy who has veiled their eyes from the truth (2Corinthians 4:4).

CONCEPT OF IDLE TALK
This actually refers to the foolishness of talking carelessly and irrelevantly. Even believers are culprits of this kind of attitude.

The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 10:19 that where there is too much talk that sin is not absent. The issue here is unbridled speaking.

When a believer refuses to put a check on his flesh to mortify it as concerning words, it will disgrace him when he speaks irrelevantly and carelessly.

When a person is flippant with his tongue, he will lie and will disregard decorum and upright self-comportment.
The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 7:11 that the adulterous woman is loud in her talk and carless in her attitude.

She has no regard for law and order. She is not a harlot but she puts on the attire of a harlot. This is the evidence of lack of restraint in character.

This is the main problem of a person who engages in idle talk. This has consequences.

DEALING WITH BLASPHEMIES AND IDLE TALK
The truth is that these have consequences. The Bible teaches that life and death are in the power of the tongue. We are responsible for the words that come out of our mouth.

The only way to deal with this vice is to get born again and begin the process of the spiritual disciplines that grows a believer from infancy to maturity.

These spiritual disciplines are; the study of the word of God, prayers, fasting, fellowshipping with brethren, keeping the devotional or quiet time, discipleship, etc.

These spiritual disciplines will help the believer gain strength in his inner man by the Spirit of God. He will then be able to tame and mortify his flesh and keep it under the governing influence of the Holy Ghost.

The Bible teaches in 1Corinthians 12:3 that no man speaking with the benefit of the help of the Holy Ghost can blaspheme Jesus Christ.

It also teaches that no man can truly honour God without the help of the Holy Ghost.
