Lenten Day 17: BLASPHEMY AND IDLE TALK
BLASPHEMY AND IDLE TALK
MATTHEW 12:22-31, REFS: PSALM 39:1, ECCL.3:7, PHILLIPIANS 2:3
BLASPHEMY; this is the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.
IDLE TALK; this refers to empty rhetoric or insincere or exaggerated talk.
UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMIES AND IDLE SPEAKINGS
The issue of blasphemies is a function of ignorance. It is when a person does not have adequate accurate information about a sacred practice and he draws conclusions based on his limited defective information. This makes him to dishonor sacred things, processes or persons.
People usually fear what they don’t understand. We see this play out in our text. The Pharisees, Sadducees who were the elders of the nation of Israel had seen Jesus cast out demons. This was a feat that they hadn’t been able to do except by some satanic Jewish exorcists. These where the people Jesus referred to when he said ‘…by who do your children cast out demons, therefore they shall be your judges’. By this we understand that some had attempted casting out demons but it was done by exorcism. So, with defective limited information about Jesus Christ, they accused him of casting out devils by the prince of devils, Beelzebub.
This was dishonorable. To allude that Christ worked miracles by partnering with a fallen entity. It was demeaning and all together insulting to the Creator. And as such, he warned them about continuing in such blasphemy showing them it was able to lead them to the unforgivable one.
Idle talk is when we do not pay attention to the manner of consecration required to live right as children of God but become careless and as such speak carelessly. Speaking without considering the weight of what we talk about. It is a loss of responsibility for the words we speak. This is what produces empty vows, gossip and foul language.
ROOT CAUSE OF BLASPHEMY AND IDLE TALK
The major cause of blasphemy and idle talk is a deeper foolishness called laziness. When a man is not diligent in anything he does, failure sets in. This is because ignorance of excellence causes the person to fail. Now laziness causes him not to push to understand all that it takes to function and not fail.
In the same way, we have lazy Christians who won’t pay the needed sacrifice to learn from Scriptures the Kingdom truths available to them. When they will not spend time, judiciously to study the Word of God, they will call sacred things common and common things sacred. Ignorance of Scriptural Truth brought about by laziness, is what produces people who blaspheme holy ordinances.
Another cause is religious bias. When people are indoctrinated into a religious bias, they will invariably behave like the members of the Sanhedrin. These Jewish elders had been taught they laws of Moses but had twisted it to suit their own purposes. They produced a congregation of religiously biased people. They were so biased that the messiah stood before them and they stubbornly spat in his face. They rejected the truth because of their biases. And as such spoke blasphemously against Jesus.
The Bible warns us in 2Timothy 2:15 to study the word of God. But it was not just to study that it cautioned us to do but to show ourselves approved unto God, RIGHTLY dividing the word of truth. This is because there is a wrong way of dividing the word of truth. That wrong way is blasphemy produced by blurred, biased study.
The cause of idle talk is a deep-seated problem called indiscipline. An unbridled tongue that speaks without check. Such a tongue will speak without much knowledge and offend in foulness of speech. Proverbs 10:19 tells us that where there is unbridled talking, sin will not usually be absent. But he that keeps his tongue is wise. Those who are careless with their tongue will offend in many ways and even do themselves harm by speaking inoperative words or foul exaggerations that exalt them beyond their actual capacity to their detriment
DEALING WITH BLASPHEMY AND IDLE TALK
The major way of handling these vices is to seek to know the truth from the Scripture. When a man pursues kingdom truth, he will find it and will drive out dangerous ignorance from his life. This is because the Bible says in Matthew 7:7 ‘…ask and you shall be given seek and you shall find knock and it shall be opened unto you…’
A sound prayer life will help instill discipline in a person by the power of the Holy Ghost. This prayer life is the kind that seeks to know the Lord. Not the kind that is seeking silver and gold from the hands of the Lord.
To make sure that we keep the daily routine of studying, accountability partners can be very important. One who will urge us when we are not so willing to go study and pray. They can also be disciplers. People who will continue to check in on our Christian life.
