Lenten Day 7: Honour To God, Parents, Servants Of God And Our Betters
TOPIC: Honour To God, Parents, Servants Of God And Our Betters
TEXT: MARK 7:1-10
MEMORY VERSE: MARK 7:6B ‘This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me’
DEFINITION / INTRODUCTION
HONOUR: high respect; great esteem.
In our text, the Pharisees saw Jesus disciples eating without washing their hands and complained. Jesus replied them by quoting Prophet Isaiah which declared that they honored God with their mouth but not with their hearts.
THE BIBLICAL CONCEPT PARENTS, SERVANTS OF GOD AND OUR BETTERS
The concept of parents in Scripture is a reference not only to biological parents but to people who were responsible for the younger ones as mentors. These people where proven hands that God had shaped. Mordecai nurtured Esther and she honored him even though he was not really her father. In fact, the Bible speaking in Ephesians 6:1 calls them parents-in-the-Lord.
The issue of Servants of God is a grave matter with God. 1Timothy 5:17 teaches us that there are elders who carry the anointing deserving of honor. The betters also refers to all people who are naturally older or advanced in life and more experienced.
THE BIBLICAL CONCEPT HONOR
This refers to a choosing to pay high regard or respect to those who either naturally or by virtue of status or place of authority are elders. This is a command from God. In fact this is the only commandment with a promise from God. God’s desire is that the life of love and order should be the guiding rule over his people. Where there is no respect for people, there is chaos. Even in heaven, respect for constituted authority exists among the heavenly beings. Humility is the quality that produces this attitude of honoring elders.
God also warned the parents not to exasperate the children. This means that God also expects the parents to also show some kind of respect for the children committed into their hands.
This brings harmony in a given family environment or church fellowship setting. When the issue of humility is tackled well, dishonor will cease from amongst brethren. Believers honor because of love for God not eye service.
